ABOUT ABOUT

Join Firelands Archaeology for a virtual presentation as we welcome W. Kevin Pape and explore the fascinating history, interpretation, and cultural associations of the popular Inscription Rock petroglyph located on Lake Erie’s Kelleys Island.  Learn about how this popular tourist attraction was discovered in 1833 and how the study and interpretation of the intricate inscriptions has evolved over the years.

Mr. Pape is a consulting archaeologist and nationally recognized expert in cultural heritage management, historic preservation, and public archaeology and founder of Gray & Pape Heritage Management located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Kevin and his family have a long history of spending summers on Kelleys Island and he has personally devoted considerable time in researching the history and archaeology of the island. His efforts culminated in the entire island - including archaeolgical sites, cultural landscapes, and historic buildings -- being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Firelands Archaeology is a 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer organization located in Sheffield Village, Ohio founded to discover, document, and conserve archaeological sites and materials in north central Ohio. We welcome participation by members of the public and professional researchers alike. A portion of the lecture donations are tax-deductible and all proceeds are used to enable further research into the cultural history of our region.
